2.3 billion people will be killed?

The second scariest prophesy in the bible, behind the prophecy of eternal hell, says “a third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur” (Revelations 9:18). United States Census Bureau says the world population was 6.8 billion in 2009, so is it really possible, or most importantly probable, for 2.3 billion people to die within 3.5 years, as this prophesy says?

The bible teaches that there will be a 7 year period in human history that is known as the Great Tribulation, and this period will precede the second coming of Jesus Christ. It is in this period when people’s rebellion against God will be at its highest point, and God will release his wrath upon the inhabitants of the world through major catastrophes. Describing this period, the bible says “there will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then” (Daniel 12:1). The distress of this time will reach climax when 2.3 billion people die because of what the bible describe as plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur.

But how will this happen? Could it be the bible was predicting the usage of nuclear weapons in a war to the detriment of 1/3 of human kind? One thing for sure, the bible teaches about a war that will end all wars, Battle of Armageddon, and it is in this war where many biblical scholars predict full nuclear onslaught. But are our nuclear weapons enough to kill 1/3 of the world population?

Princeton University released a lecture in 2007 on Nuclear weapons effects, and that lecture included an ‘NRDC “Assured Destruction” Calculations’ report which predicts how many 475-kt nuclear weapons will be required to threaten 25% of the population. It says 124 (475-kt) nuclear weapons are required to threaten 25% of US population when using 1999 population data, while 368 (475-kt) nuclear weapons are required to threaten 25% of China’s population which was 320million in 1999. But to threaten 25% of the population of all countries known or suspected to have nuclear weapons, you only needed 994 (475-kt) nuclear weapons in 1999. So in 1999 all it took to kill 723 559 996 people was 994 (475-kt) nuclear weapons. But do we have those many nuclear weapons required to kill 1/3 of all human kind?

US is said to have 9600 warheads, while Russia has 12 000, with UK, France, China, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel having a dozen more of their own, although only around 25% of all warheads are said to be active. Although most of these nuclear weapons are not the 475-kt yields needed to do the most damage to human kind, a countries like United States is said to have had close to 400 of them before their production was terminated, while it has more than 500 (300-kt) weapons that can be converted to 475-kt. The majority of Russia’s weapons are said to be 550-kt, while the average size is roughly 400-kt.

So there is no doubt that nuclear weapons have the ability to kill 1/3 of world population, and if the bible should be believed then it’s only a matter of time before all this happens. But how do we know for sure that the bible was referring to nuclear weapons and not something else, as the bible was written 2000 years ago when the possibility of even a gun was unthinkable? The bible said something similar that can only happen due to nuclear weaponry, it said: “the sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place” (Revelations 6:14). Compare the bible to this effect of nuclear weapons as mentioned by Federation of American Scientists: “A nuclear detonation creates a severe environment including blast, thermal pulse, neutrons, x- and gamma-rays, radiation, electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and ionization of the upper atmosphere. Depending upon the environment in which the nuclear de-vice is detonated, blast effects are manifested as ground shock, water shock, “blueout,” cratering, and large amounts of dust and radioactive fallout. All pose problems for the survival of friendly systems and can lead to the destruction or neutralization of hostile assets”. From this effect alone, we are certain that the bible predicted a war where nuclear weapons would be used, and how horrible it would be those days.

The good part for us Christians is that we would be miraculously taken into heaven before all this things happens, in what is known as the rapture. Am I certain of that? 100% certain! The most important question is: where would you be?
