Two reasons you should be a Christian.

What is it that Christianity offers that nothing else offers? What is it that makes Christianity different from any other religion? What is it that a Christian has that an atheist doesn’t have? What is it that should make anybody to consider the message of salvation above anything else?

We are told by countless pastors that Christianity offers happiness and abundant life, but I can assure you that there are many things you can do in this world that can offer you happiness and abundant life and Christianity is likely to offer you the opposite (see John 15:20, 2 Timothy 3:12). Those who preach prosperity Gospel will tell you about the blessings that you can receive in Christ, but I can assure you that the richest people in the world are not Christians and they are doing just fine without Jesus. Some will tell you that Christianity shields you from sin, but I can assure you that the bible says “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). Others will testify to you about the healing power that Christianity offers, but I can assure you that hospitals are full of Christians (see 2 Corinthians 12:7, 1 Timothy 5:23). So why am I a Christian, and why do I beg you to be one?

The answer is found in the most popular scripture in the bible: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:16, 18). This scripture gives us two reasons why anybody should be a Christian:

  • You shall not perish

Christianity guarantees everyone who believes in Jesus Christ that they will not perish. What does that mean? That means because of your sins you have already been condemned to hell, as your sins are offensive to God. But when you ask God for forgiveness and repent from your sins, then God forgives you and through Jesus Christ your condemnation is taken away. How do you know if you have sins? The only way to know if you have sinned against God is by comparing your actions, words and thoughts against His highest standard called the Ten Commandments (see Exodus 20). Have you ever lied? If yes, then you have broken His 9th commandment. Have you ever stolen anything? If yes, then you have broken His 8th commandment. Have you ever looked at a person with lust? If yes, then you have broken His 7th commandment by committing adultery in your heart. Since you have already broken 3 of His 10 commandments, then you have confirmation that you have sinned against Him. Regardless of your religious background, class, race, or sex you have broken His Law, and the scripture above says you are already condemned to hell.

The only way to avoid condemnation is by accepting the sacrifice that Jesus has done for your sin by dying on the cross. You can accept it by saying a prayer of forgiveness and ask God to forgive you of your sins, and most importantly you can repent from your sins and declaring not to do them anymore.

  • Eternal life

Eternal life is at the centre of Christianity, and it’s what Christians are commanded to encourage each other on (see 1 Thessalonians 4:18). How do I know if Christians will have eternal life? Because Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead; and He lives in heaven and has promised to bring us with Him. His resurrection is the reason we are certain that we will live forever, and it’s the reason we are certain of our salvation.

Do you have eternal life? Are you certain you are not condemned to hell? Then I plead with you to be a Christian.
