The Law of Gravity

In science, we learn about the Law of Gravity, which is one of the most undisputed scientific discoveries. According to Wikipedia, gravity “is most familiar as the agent that gives weight to objects with mass and causes them to fall to the ground when dropped”. In other words, it is gravity that makes it impossible for humans to fly, as it causes us to fall to the ground whenever we try to fly. Whenever a plane crashes, killing all the occupants; we sadly note that the law of gravity took effect, and had there been no gravity then that plane would have never crashed. Does it mean the law of gravity is an evil thing, since millions have died because of it? Not at all, in fact it is gravity that “is responsible for keeping the Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun; for keeping the Moon in its orbit around the Earth; for the formation of tides; for convection, by which fluid flow occurs under the influence of a density gradient and gravity; for heating the interiors of forming stars and planets to very high temperatures; and for various other phenomena observed on Earth”. But how do we explain the fact that millions of people have died because of the Law of Gravity?

Millions of people have died, not because of the cruelty of gravity, but because they have violated a long-standing and just Law of Gravity that is meant to protect them; and the consequences of that violation are usually fatal. The most amazing part is that every person in the world knows about the Law of Gravity, yet it doesn’t stop us from trying to violate it, even for our own pleasure. Parachutes are not only created to protect us from the consequences of falling victim to gravity, but they are also meant to give us a thrill from toying with gravity. We get pleasure from violating gravity and we are addicted to it, as you can see from people’s interest in sky diving and bungee jumping. Our fascination with near-death experiences makes us ignore the dangers associated with violating the Law of Gravity, and the possibility of death never frightens us enough to obey this Law.

I also know of another Law that is more fatal than the Law of Gravity, yet people have no regard for it and they violate it without fearing the consequences associated with violating it. That Law is called the Ten Commandments, and it carries a death penalty for everybody who violates it. This Law is also written in the heart of every person through a conscience, yet people are not dissuaded from violating it. How can you know you have violated this Law? Here’s how:

  • The 10th commandment says you shall not covet. Have you ever jealously wanted something that belongs to another person?
  • The 9th commandment says you shall not lie. Have you ever told a lie, regardless of the reasons?
  • The 8th commandment says you shall not steal. Have you ever stolen anything regardless of its value?
  • Jesus said “anyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). Have you ever looked at a woman with lust, and undressed her with your eyes? Have you as a woman ever looked at a man with lust?
  • “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer” (1 John 3:15). Have you ever hated anyone?

Anybody who has violated this Law will suffer the consequences in a lake of fire called hell, for eternity. Is this Law cruel? Not at all! This Law is meant to protect us from each other, and without it we will annihilate each other. Can you imagine a world where murder is not a criminal act but is encouraged, where women are raped by lustful men or men are raped by other men, where people steal what others have worked hard for, or where people can lie and get away with their crimes? Nobody wants such a world; hence this Law is just and necessary!

When we break the Law of Gravity, we count on the parachute to keep us safe from any fatal consequences. The same applies to the Ten Commandments. Because we have broken them, we now need a ‘parachute’ to keep us from the consequences, and our ‘parachute’ is Jesus Christ. Believing in a parachute doesn’t help anybody from falling victim to gravity, but a person needs to put (wear) on a parachute and properly use it. So it is with Jesus, it doesn’t help just believing in Him, all of us need to put our trust in Him and do as He says. We need to repent from our violations of the Ten Commandments, apologize to God for our violations, and put our faith in Jesus Christ. The instructions on a ‘parachute’ called Jesus Christ are found in the bible, and a parachute doesn’t work when a person doesn’t obey the instructions.
