America’s most hated family

I watched this video on Westboro Baptist Church (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKyxTg3K3Jk), and I’ll comment on some of the points put forward. Let it be clear that I don’t endorse Westboro as I believe it’s in contravention of 1 Peter 3:15-16. Here are the comments I wrote as I watched the video:

  1. God does indeed hate America; after all it kills close to 1m babies every year and it’s the source of most evil in the world. If God doesn’t hate America, then He should apologize for annihilating Sodom and Gomorrah.
  2. America is indeed doomed, and if it’s not doomed then God will have to apologize to ancient Israel, Judah, Nineveh, Edom, Babylon, Syria, Egypt, etc.
  3. Should we hate homosexuals? Definitely not, but God hates homosexuality though (Leviticus 20). Christians are commanded the do the following: “But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.” (1 Corinthians 5:11 emphasis added).
  4. Should all homosexuals die? The bible says the “wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). So homosexuals, just like all fornicators, adulterers, thieves, liars, drunkards, etc are in the process of death. So it doesn’t matter what Westboro says.
  5. Was 9/11 God’s punishment on America? I don’t know, and nobody knows, so Westboro has no right to go to that territory, regardless of how tempting it is for Christians to come to that conclusion.
  6. Should US soldiers fight for a depraved nation, as Westboro describes the US? Personally, I support the wars that America is engaged in, and I know that if they lose them then all hell will break loose for all peace loving people of the world, especially Jews and Christians. However I get more convinced every day that the US is not going to win the war in Afghanistan. There are many Christian soldiers in Afghanistan, and they are not only fighting for the US but for a bigger cause, so I hope that God will give them victory and that He will be on their side, in fact I pray for them. However, if God decides to judge America in this war, then He would be justified. America, just like my own country, is not different from the many nations that God judged in biblical times.
  7. Westboro is definitely wrong and evil for protesting at funerals of slain soldiers, especially since many of those soldiers are Christian. A Christian has a message to being forth, but the message should be done in “gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). That’s not respectful nor is it being gentle with people.
  8. The duty to every Christian is to preach the Gospel and bring forth disciples. So Westboro is wrong if they think the duty of a Christian is only to read a riot act to sinners. Yes the riot act should be read, but it should be followed by the message of grace in Jesus Christ. Preaching the Law without the intention to follow it up with Grace is not biblical, and no Christian should do it, otherwise it perverts the Deity of God. God is not a God of love, but He’s a God of love, mercy, grace, righteousness, justice and judgment. All of God’s traits should be preached without being biased towards one of them. It’s wrong to only preach a God of love as the New Agers do, and it’s equally wrong to only preach a God of justice as Westboro does.
  9. Thank God for all His judgments? “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.” (Revelations 16:7).
  10. Should children be exposed to the lifestyle of Westboro? I feel for the kids because they are only shown one part of the Deity of God, as such they will grow up to be hateful people instead of having godly anger towards sin but still have enough love to show a sinner the way to God’s forgiveness. On the other hand, no children belong to the state.
  11. Is Westboro a cult? I never call any church a cult, because I know that none of the churches (denominations) today qualify to be compared to the first church of the 1st and 2nd centuries. In fact I’m convinced that every denomination has flaws biblically. Some reject the gifts of the Spirit, some rejects the doctrine of God’s wrath, others reject the Trinity, some deny salvation through grace alone, others tell their women not to wear trousers and those who do are going to hell, and the list goes on. So I can never call Westboro a cult, however I doubt their salvation.
  12. Yes sinners are going to hell, whether they don’t believe in hell or the existence of God it doesn’t matter, and its offensive to the sinner to hear that. But telling people about hell without offering Grace is not biblical, and that’s what Westboro does. And yes we should tell people in their faces that they are going to hell, without offering them even a little hint that they will escape it unless they repent and trust in Jesus.
  13. It’s a good thing for a young woman not to seek marriage so she can serve God, however not everybody is meant to live a life of celibacy (1 Corinthians 7)
  14. Of course Desmond Tutu is a perverted man from a biblical point of view, and he should be exposed. But I don’t know if that’s the right way to go about it.
  15. It’s sad to see that this church spends so much time figuring a way to be more offensive to people. Isn’t it enough that the Gospel is already offensive?
  16. And I see they also hate Jews just as Martin Luther did. Don’t they know that Christianity is from Judaism, so how could you insult something that gave birth to your faith? I’m not saying orthodox Jews are on a good ground biblically, because they are not, but it’s insane to hate them or anybody for that matter. Don’t they know the bible says “for whoever touches you (Jews) touches the apple of his (God’s) eye” (Zechariah 2:8 emphasis added)?
  17. Insulting Billy Graham isn’t even worth a comment. The bible says “but I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca, ‘ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell” (Matthew 5:22).
  18. “Repent or Perish” and “Prepare to meet your God” are biblical messages that everybody in the bible has preached, which every Christian should preach. I wish they preached that message more than any other messages they preach.
  19. Tithes or offerings are biblically commanded and every Christian should obey, so there’s nothing wrong with that.
  20. For all the things they do and say, they are still entitled to free speech and all the rights that come with a democracy. So I can’t believe that some people would hit a child with an object so they can get back at them. Tolerance should also apply to even Westboro.
  21. There is nothing funny about hell, nothing at all, and God doesn’t enjoy sending people to hell (see Ezekiel 33:11). The thought of hell should make every Christian be in sorrow over the life of men and women, at least I know that’s what happens to me.
  22. How did Fred Phelps get to this point? How did he create this mess and mislead people to such an extent? It’s a shame!
  23. Last point, the fear of God should be instilled on every human, because “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31). But I doubt the members of Westboro even know the Law of God, because they seem to pick and choose those they love.
