Pray for the destruction of Al-Shabaab

We normally associate prayer with our plea for mercy and love from God, either on our behalf or for others.  But are we supposed to pray for the prosperity and long life of really wicked people?

David says in one his prayers: “may ruin overtake them by surprise— may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin” (Psalm 35:8). He also says: “May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation” (Psalm 69:23-27).

It’s clear that David is praying for the total annihilation of those people whom he believes were haters of God, peace and justice. He didn’t pray for their long life and prosperity, but he basically prayed for their death. Whenever I read about the horrible things that an Islamic extremism organization called Al-Shabaab does, I can’t help but pray for their total annihilation. I pray for God to kill all of them in the most gruel way possible. I know it will happen in hell, and they will judged and punished as their sins deserve, but I wish God can make a spectacle of them so that all wicked men who hate peace can learn and fear Him.

It doesn’t sound Christian, right? I know, but the bible has never convicted me as much as it did when it said: “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 82:2-4). Reality is that Al-Shabaab kills Somalis in public as a spectacle for their wickedness and hatred for everything God stands for. For a long time, they have killed Christian families in public, and left their bodies lying on the streets to put fear in the hearts of others who are Christian. Recently, they have killed a Somali Christian man then they took his four young boys as child soldiers, while the mourning wife was left to suffer alone at home. Just today, they executed two little girls for spying for their enemies. AFP report says:

“The group informed the population that a punishment was going to be carried out in public on two women they claimed had been found guilty of spying,” said a resident, who gave his name only as Ali.”I didn’t know they were planning to shoot them. The two girls were sitting on the ground with their hands tied behind their back. Then a group of fighters covered their faces and shot them from behind,” he said.”It was shocking, the girls were so young. They looked so desperate but nobody could help them,” Ali added.

I have nothing to say to those people who just sat there and watched as this act of injustice was being carried out. They must have feared for the lives of their own daughters, but they didn’t fear enough to at least protest this cruel injustice.

I pray for the total death and destruction of Al-Shabaab. David’s prayer is my prayer today:

“May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
